Day 22 - the volcano

Image
The latest eruption on the Reykjanes peninsular has been declared over, but you can walk to the eruption site. It's 4.7km one way, so we set off about 9am from the car park. The track was actually a road also used by the Volcano Shuttle, who were charging 70 Euros for the trip.  Had I known the eruption would have ended as quickly as it did, I would have taken the Shuttle option on the day we first stopped here, the day we arrived. I didn't feel up for the hike at the time due to jet lag. Shoulda woulda coulda.  Today was perfect weather wise, sunny, warm and zero wind to speak of. It was a pleasant walk, rocky underfoot sometimes as we are walking over an ancient lava field to get to the new one. We could feel the heat from the lava and see the heat shimmer above the lava field. There was quite a strong smell too, and it took me a while to figure what it reminded me of, but it smelt a bit like fireworks.  I sent the drone up for some photos, had to bring it back twice be...

Day 21 - Vik to Hafnarfjordur

Image
We dieseled up in Vik (another $300 to fill the tank from almost empty) and headed back north.  It was a stunner of a day, warm (about 15 degrees) sunny and with very little wind, making it feel warmer than a 15 degree day in winter at home. Leaving Vik heading north We stopped in Hella for the loo and I bought a black sandwich with salmon for lunch. B requested we swing by the camp site where we packed everything  before the L trail hike. She had a hunch that the charging cable for her Garmin had been dropped on the grass.  We returned to the space where we had camped and had a walk about. Found it! Sadly it was no longer intact. 😪 We found the culprit. It got whacked We meandered our way to Seltún, another geo-thermal area that is much better there Geysir, and with way less people. Vikings on the horizon We stopped for lunch, my black roll was delicious. I think the black is from using activated charcoal in the dough. Black roll with salmon egg and lettuce Here's some ...

Day 20 - Fossatun to Vik

Image
It was really cold this morning, about 3 degrees with misty rain.  There was a hardy Swedish family eating breakfast outside at their table and chairs as we left.  We headed south as the weather looked good on the coast, intending to stop in Vik, as B wanted another go at puffins.   It was a pretty drive, and the wind was wicked cold here when we stopped for photos. We stopped at Bruarfoss, an amazingly blue waterfall that we had loved on our last trip.  It was HEAVING with people and some of the area was closed off in an attempt to re-grass it.  Still beautiful, and I think my favourite. Bruarfoss We continued south with the weather improving, and stopped at Geysir, again, heaving with tour buses as it's on the ring road, and part of the "golden circle" of tourists attractions. It's ok, but nothing to rave about.  The best bit is a geyser that erupts in a large plume of water every 5-10 minutes.  We managed to catch that on camera as the water bu...

Day 19 - Kirkjufell to Fossatun

Image
The weather was crap in the morning, so that's 3/3 for shit weather at Kirkjufell. So crappy I forgot to even take a phone snap.  We did try some long exposures, but it was meh. We carried on, working our way around the Snaefellsnes Peninsular, stopping at places we had missed last trip (the weather was even worse last time). We found a few gems. We spent about 5 minutes watching this couple pose for photos in front of this cute little church on the hill, before we eventually got fed up and drove past them to the church. Sigh Further on, a little town that has a whole bunch of murals painted on buildings, that were really cool. Small selection is below. Here I was fascinated by this one Belinda befriend the local cat. Keli the cat Next stop was the Saxhóll crater, which had a steep staircase winding around the side to the top. 384 steps. It was awesome, well worth the stop. Trusty camper in the frame Panorama of the crater Kinda like candy, only liquid rock  Looking from the c...
