Day 19 - Kirkjufell to Fossatun

The weather was crap in the morning, so that's 3/3 for shit weather at Kirkjufell. So crappy I forgot to even take a phone snap.  We did try some long exposures, but it was meh.

We carried on, working our way around the Snaefellsnes Peninsular, stopping at places we had missed last trip (the weather was even worse last time).

We found a few gems.

We spent about 5 minutes watching this couple pose for photos in front of this cute little church on the hill, before we eventually got fed up and drove past them to the church.

Further on, a little town that has a whole bunch of murals painted on buildings, that were really cool. Small selection is below.

Next stop was the Saxhóll crater, which had a steep staircase winding around the side to the top. 384 steps. It was awesome, well worth the stop.

What is happening now on the Reykanes peninsular (multiple eruptions over the last few years) is exactly what happened here, only millions of years ago. Lava eruptions, with craters collapsing and lava spilling out across the flat ground, eventually covered with moss. 

We continued around the peninsular, more lava fields.

We have parked up at Fossatun camp, where we stayed last time we were here. It has a stunning view over a waterfall, where I had grilled lamb for dinner (B had plokkfiskur -  fish stew gratin). Mine was perfection on a plate.

Day minus 6 - Packing and blog setup

 Heading to Iceland again, mid-summer this time, to meet up with my Best Roomie Belinda who is flying in from Canada, with a plan to walk the Laugavegur & Fimmvorduhals trails in the highlands.  The L trail is 55km long and can be walked in 2-4 days, and the Fimm trail is an additional 35km which can be walked in 1-2 days.  We're allowing for 6 days hiking in total, so approx 12-25km per day, with plenty of photo stops along the way.  We are camping, as you have to book super early to get huts, and then you are tied to whatever days you've booked, regardless of weather.  We figured that tenting would give us more flexibility, the downside being we have to carry tents, sleeping mat, cooking gear and food. Day 13 - The West End

This morning our coffee making was put to shame by a German guy in the camp kitchen. You thought we were obsessive?  Just you wait. He had a hanging scale, which he used to weigh the beans in a plastic bag, tipping some out, putting a bean or two back in until he was satisfied the weight was perfect. Then he ground them in a hand grinder, and put the ground coffee in the filter basket. Next he pulled out what I now know (thanks google) is called an espresso distribution tool.  It looks like a miniature version of those wire head scratches things you see demo'd at the mall.  Coffee distribution tool He used this to make sure the coffee grinds were evenly spread around the filter basket. Once happy with the even-ness of the grinds, he tamped, and placed the filter into a fancy dancy stove top espresso maker.  He heated milk on the stove in a separate jug, and once it was the correct temperature, frothed the milk with a portable milk frother.  It was like watching ...

Day 3 - Vik Dyrholaey #2 and The Big Pack

 The campsite at Vik filled up a lot overnight and was pretty packed.  It's a good spot to base yourself for various touristy trips in that area. We made a quick stop at the local Kronan supermarket and bought new gas canisters, the ones we got yesterday had the wrong thread for our cookers.  D'oh. Just as well we checked or it would have been cold dinners and iced coffee each day!  You can re-hydrate with cold water but it takes much longer, and cold cooked breakfast of eggs sausage and potato just doesn't have the same appeal. We headed to Reynisfjara beach, but it was cold and grey and raining, so didn't stay long.   Reynisfjara black sand beach The sneaker wave warning was only yellow today, so not much entertainment Headed back to Dyrholaey for another go at the puffins, to a slightly different spot this time, with no more success snapping them in flight.
